Mealworm Housing

Housing Mealworms

If you don't plan to breed your mealworms, they can be kept in a container (with or without substrate) in the fridge at 45 degrees. This slows their metabolism and keeps them from pupating. Kept in this dormant state, they will last several months.

If kept in the fridge, they will need to warm up and eat once a week. Remove from the fridge until they warm up enough to become active, then add 1/4 of an apple per 1000 mealworms for them to eat.

Refridgerated mealworms should be removed from fridge and allowed to warm up enough to become active before feeding to pets.

If you want to breed your mealworms, do not refridgerate. Instead keep them in a larger container with 2" of substrate.

You don't need a lid, but can use 2" packing tape around the inside top of the container to prevent them from escaping. If they manage to climb that high, the tape is too slippery to climb and they will fall when they reach it.

Mealworms should be kept at 75 degrees (room temperature).

Cut 3 or 4 pieces of newspaper to fit your container, while leaving space around the sides for the mealworms to climb between the paper and container sides, as well as leaving an area to place vegetables on top of the substrate.
