Mealworms General InformationMeal Worms, (Tenebrio molitor), make a readily available feeder insect for many reptile, amphibian, and bird species. The mealworm has a yellow - brown exoskeleton called chitin, and averages an inch in length at full growth. Mealworms, while similar to Superworms, are NOT the same animal. They are easily digested by most insect eating pets, but have more chitin than superworms, and don't grow as large. Mealworms are easy to keep and breed at home. Giant Mealworms are regular mealworms that are sprayed with hormones to make them grow very large. Giant mealworms make an excellent fish bait, but are not recommended as a feeder insect due to the hormones. |
