Insects Care Sheets
Most reptile diets, as well as many amphibian, snake, turtle, spider, fish, and bird diets, should include a variety of insects including: superworms, silkworms, butterworms, waxworms, crickets, mealworms, and depending on species perhaps other insects as well.Each insect will have its' own nutritional qualities making variety an important part of the diet. Species, age, size and activity levels of your pet should be taken into account when choosing feeder insects.
It is also important to note that the diet of the insect itself affects its' nutritional qualities. When possible, insects should be gutloaded for a minimum of 24 - 48 hours before being fed to pets.
When adding a new insect to your pets diet, feed sparingly at first to be sure your pet is digesting the insects well. If your pet is digesting regularly, he/she should not have any problems passing the new insects, and fecal matter should not contain large amounts of undigested pieces of the new feeder insects.
After a few feedings, if digestion seems normal, slowly increase feedings to a regular sized meal for your specific pet.
Most insects, when left in your pets' tank may chew on a sick, weak, or sleeping pet. Any uneaten insects should be removed from your pets tank after feeding, or better yet, fed one at a time, or in a seperate feeding cage.
