Treating Wood and Rocks for Reptile Cages

If you decide to use found objects for your reptile cages, be sure to treat them accordingly. The last thing you want is to find a great new branch for your animal only to discover you've introduced mites to the environment.

Rocks can be boiled in a large pot for 20 - 30 minutes.
Wood can be baked in the oven at low temps for several hours.

Remove any bark or moss before sterilizing.
If the wood is too large for the oven, use your bathtub to soak it in a mild (10%) bleach solution for several hours. Rinse repeatedly to remove any trace of bleach, this may take some time.
Place the wood outside in the sun until completely dry before using it in your reptile enclosure.
